In a heartfelt tribute, the West Babylon community has honored the late John D. Norris by renaming a portion of Essex Street as John D. Norris Memorial Way.
This dedication recognizes Norris's unwavering commitment to public service and community engagement.
The ceremony, held in June, brought together family, friends, and local officials to celebrate the life of a man who left an indelible mark on the community.
John D. Norris, a retired NYC Transit Police Officer, was not only a dedicated law enforcement professional but also a founding member of the Belmont Lake Civic Association.
His passion for community advocacy and youth mentorship earned him the reputation of a "remarkable man" who dedicated his life to the betterment of others.
The newly named John D. Norris Memorial Way stretches along Essex Street from Straight Path to Lamont Place.
This renaming serves as a lasting reminder of Norris's contributions and the profound impact he had on West Babylon.
During the ceremony, Suffolk County officials, including Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez, Legislator Jason A. Richberg, and Assemblyman Kwani B. O'Pharrow, joined the Norris family to unveil the new street sign.
The event was marked by heartfelt speeches and shared memories, underscoring the deep respect and admiration the community holds for Norris.
In addition to this tribute, West Babylon continues to focus on community development and infrastructure improvements.
Recent projects include the Suffolk County Water Authority's initiative to replace over 2,000 feet of outdated water mains on Arnold Avenue and surrounding streets, enhancing the reliability of the local water supply.
Furthermore, PSEG Long Island has embarked on storm hardening efforts in the area, aiming to strengthen the electric grid and reduce outages during severe weather conditions.
These initiatives reflect the community's ongoing commitment to honoring its past while building a resilient future.
As West Babylon remembers and honors the legacy of John D. Norris, the community also looks forward to continued growth and improvement, ensuring that the values he championed endure for generations to come. |
