Long Island Braces for Holiday Weekend Storm: High Winds & Flooding

Holiday Weekend Storm to Batter Long Island With High Winds and Flooding

A powerful nor'easter is set to disrupt Columbus Day plans with dangerous gusts, heavy rain, and significant coastal flooding expected across Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Hopes for a calm fall holiday weekend are being washed away as a powerful storm system takes aim at Long Island.

A menacing nor'easter is forecast to bring a trifecta of threats, including damaging high winds, up to three inches of rain, and significant coastal flooding.

The National Weather Service has issued multiple alerts, including a High Wind Watch and a Coastal Flood Warning, urging residents that the most dangerous impacts will arrive on Sunday.

Forecasters are warning of gusts that could reach a punishing 60 mph, particularly from Sunday afternoon into the evening.

Officials are concerned about the combination of saturated ground and strong winds hitting trees that still have their leaves.

This scenario dramatically increases the potential for downed trees and widespread power outages.

The coastal flood warning is in effect for southern Nassau County and southwestern Suffolk County, with widespread moderate flooding expected to close roadways.

Some low-lying homes and businesses near the water could even see flooding on their first floors.

Residents with early Halloween decorations have been advised to secure them before they are blown away by the intense winds.

In response to the threat, Fire Island Ferries announced it will suspend service from Sunday afternoon through Monday.

Meanwhile, the Village of Babylon is offering residents parking in municipal lots to protect vehicles from rising floodwaters.

Governor Kathy Hochul urged all New Yorkers to remain vigilant and prepare for what could be rapidly changing and dangerous conditions throughout the weekend.
